On Tuesday 10th January, 2017, Abdi Yuya Ahmad from Adama Science and Technology University in Ethiopia successfully defended his Ph.D. Thesis entitled “Firm-Level Learning and Performance in the Manufacturing Sector of Ethiopia” at Aalborg University, Denmark. Abdi is the first PhD candidate to be awarded a joint degree with support from the AfricaLics PhD Visiting Fellowship programme.
The public defence and the ensuing reception was attended by a number of Aalborg University (AAU) faculty members mainly from the Innovation, Knowledge and Economic Dynamics research group (IKE), members of the Globelics secretariat and Ethiopian friends based in Aalborg. The defence was streamed on Facebook and hence family and friends/colleagues from Ethiopia and other countries were able to follow the defence real time.The defence committee comprising the chair Professor Bengt-Åke Lundvall, Aalborg University, Department of Business and Management, Denmark; Associate Professor Martin Shrolec from CERGE, Economics Institute, Prague, Czech Republic and Professor Abdelkader Djeflat, CLERSE, Université de Lille 1, France, all commended Abdi Yuya for the work done and found Abdi Yuya qualified for the award of the PhD degree.

Abdi Yuya’s joint Ph.D. has been supported by the AfricaLics PhD visiting scholarship programme which receives financial support from the Swedish Development Agency (Sida).
The objective of the visiting scholarships is to expose the Ph.D. students´ to an international research environment focusing on innovation economics and to enhance their prospects for taking part in innovation and innovation research in their home countries in order to help foster social and economic development. It is expected that a Call for the next batch of PhD students will be published in March 2017.
